SOS Children’s Villages is an expert organization in child welfare that supports vulnerable children and families in over 130 countries. In Finland, the organization has been helping children since 1962 by offering a wide range of services to welfare districts, families, and various stakeholders. At the heart of the organization’s work is children’s wellbeing – including supporting it online.
SOS Children’s Villages had conducted an extensive internal needs assessment before starting the website project. The assessment made it clear that the old website no longer served users or the organization adequately:
In autumn 2024, SOS Children’s Villages began searching for a partner to build a truly modern, visually clear website that would address the organization’s diverse needs. The main goal was to improve usability, strengthen communications impact, and create a website that supports high-quality, ongoing content production.
The redesign focused particularly on the following areas:
1. Easy access to information The new website was designed to be logical and straightforward, enabling families, professionals, and donors to easily find the information they need. Clear navigation and a well-thought-out structure formed the core of the project.
2. Serving different target groups SOS Children’s Villages has an exceptionally wide range of stakeholders. The website’s content, navigation, and functionality were designed with the different needs of various user groups in mind, from families to welfare organizations, job seekers to donors.
3. Smooth content production The organization employs several content producers, and ensuring their work would run smoothly was a priority. The WordPress solution was built to be as intuitive as possible: content can be updated without technical expertise, making everyday work easier for years to come.
User research At the beginning of the project, we examined the challenges of the old website and identified the needs of different user groups. The research created a strong foundation for the entire redesign and helped us focus design efforts on what mattered most.
Specification and conceptualization phase The structure and content of the new website were developed in joint workshops. At the same time, technical and functional requirements were defined to ensure that the implementation would meet both current and future needs.
User interface design The new visual identity was designed in accordance with the SOS Children’s Villages brand guidelines. Clarity, ease of use, and accessibility guided the design from start to finish. The user interface was implemented in accordance with WCAG 2.1 AA accessibility requirements.
WordPress implementation We built the site on the WordPress platform, which enables flexible and easy content management even for a large user base. The solution supports efficient content production and provides a solid foundation for future expansion.
Launched on Midsummer Day 2025, the new SOS Children’s Villages website offers:
The new website supports the important work of SOS Children’s Villages and strengthens their communications by providing a platform that truly serves their mission.
