AI-ification

Also known as: AIfication, AI-fication

What is AI-ification?

AI-ification is an organisation's own act of redesigning work around what artificial intelligence makes possible. Someone decides, so the actor is named. It is narrower than AI transformation and wider than task automation, which speeds up one step without changing the process.

Why it matters

AI-ification separates the decision from the phenomenon. When a leadership team talks about AI transformation, the phrase covers two different things at once: something happening across the industry, and something the company itself decides to do. English lets those two meanings share one word, which is convenient in conversation and unhelpful in planning. Nobody owns a phenomenon. Someone owns a decision, and that someone has a budget, a deadline and a name.

This page gives the informal word a precise meaning: the act of redesigning work around what AI makes possible, carried out by a named actor inside one organisation.

How does AI-ification differ from AI transformation?

AI transformation names the phenomenon and the act interchangeably. AI-ification names only the act. In practice this matters when a company writes down what it is doing. “We are going through an AI transformation” describes weather. “We are AI-ifying claims handling this year, and this person owns it” describes work. Finnish keeps the two apart with separate words, which is where this term comes from. The Finnish noun tekoälyllistäminen names the act, while tekoälymurros and tekoälymuutos name the phenomenon.

The distinction follows an older pattern. Digitisation moved a single object into digital form and left the surrounding work alone. Digitalisation changed how the work was done and had someone behind it. Digitalisation as a whole, the industry-wide shift, happened with or without any single company’s consent. AI repeats the same three levels, and until now English has been using one phrase for two of them.

How does AI-ification differ from digitalisation?

Task automation speeds up one step and leaves the process intact. AI-ification changes the process, and afterwards the work runs a different route. The test is what you ask first. In automation you ask which step is slowest. In AI-ification you ask what this work would look like if it were designed today, with AI available from the start. The second question often removes steps rather than accelerating them.

In digitalisation What it means In AI
digitisation an act on a single object, nothing else changes task automation
digitalisation an act on an operation, with a named actor AI-ification
becoming digital happens without a named actor AI-ification as it spreads on its own
digital transformation the phenomenon as a whole AI transformation

In practice

An insurer that adds AI-assisted pre-processing to claims but keeps the handlers’ roles, targets and queues unchanged has automated one step. The work still flows the same way, and the benefit is measured in minutes. The AI-ified version redesigns the same work. Routine claims resolve without a handler, handlers move to exceptions and difficult cases, and the metric becomes decision quality and lead time instead of the number of claims processed.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between AI transformation and AI-ification?

AI transformation is used in English for both the industry-wide phenomenon and a company’s own programme. AI-ification covers only the act: an organisation redesigning its work around what AI makes possible, with someone accountable for the decision. When you need to say who is doing it and by when, the narrower word does the job.

Is AI adoption the same thing as AI-ification?

No. AI adoption measures how widely and deeply people actually use AI in their daily work. AI-ification asks whether the work itself has changed. A company can roll tools out to everyone, see genuine daily use, and still run every process exactly as before, in which case adoption succeeded and no AI-ification happened.

How does AI-ification differ from task automation?

Task automation applies to a single step and leaves the surrounding process alone. AI-ification applies to the operation, and the process looks different afterwards. The same distinction exists in digitalisation: a scanned document is still the same document, while a redesigned process is not the same process.

Is AI-ification the same as becoming AI-native?

No. AI-native describes a target state, an organisation built around AI rather than one that merely uses it. The act of getting there is AI-ification. A company can be AI-ifying its work for years without yet being AI-native, and the two words answer different questions: where you are going, and what you are doing.
